About Juneteenth

Juneteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, commemorates the emancipation of four million enslaved African Americans. The holiday originated in Galveston, Texas, where Union soldiers arrived on June 19, 1865, bringing news of the abolition of slavery. The following year marked the first official Juneteenth celebration.

Juneteenth also holds special importance in Oregon. Black pioneers have long observed Grand Emancipation Day on January 1 since 1863. In 1945, Clara People, a Kaiser shipyard worker, introduced the Juneteenth tradition to Oregon, building on these enduring legacies.

    About the Event

The Washington County Chamber Black Advisory Business Council, in collaboration with community partners, presents this annual celebration to honor the legacy and significance of Juneteenth. This event brings together culture, community, and commerce in a meaningful and engaging way.
